Bali Airport Transfer Guide: What to Expect When You Land
· Bali Holiday Trip Team · 4 min read

Your first hour in Bali sets the mood for the trip. After a long flight, the difference between walking straight to a waiting car and standing in the heat arguing about a fare is bigger than it sounds. This guide covers what happens between the plane door and your hotel, and how to make that hour easy.
Where you land
All flights arrive at I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, code DPS. It sits in the far south of the island, between Kuta and Jimbaran. That is good news if you are staying in the south, and it means a real drive if you are heading to Ubud, Canggu or further.
The steps after landing
- Immigration. Many visitors need a visa on arrival, which can also be bought online before the trip as an e-visa. The online version usually means a shorter queue.
- Baggage claim. Bags can take a while at busy times.
- Customs. Indonesia asks arriving passengers to complete an arrival declaration online. Do it before you fly and keep the QR code on your phone.
- Bali tourist levy. Bali charges international visitors a one-time levy, which can be paid online before arrival.
Rules and fees change, so check the official Indonesian immigration and Bali tourism websites a week before you fly.
At quiet times you can be outside 30 minutes after landing. When several long-haul flights arrive together, allow 60 to 90 minutes.
In the arrivals hall
Before the exit you pass money changers, ATMs and counters selling local SIM cards. A few tips:
- Change or withdraw a small amount of rupiah here for your first day. Rates are usually better in town.
- A local SIM or an eSIM is worth having, because you will use maps and messaging all week.
- Once you step outside, expect to be offered transport by several people at once. If you have already booked, a polite "no, thank you" and a steady walk is all it takes.
Your transfer options
Airport taxi. There is an official taxi counter with fixed prices by area. It is simple and safe, though not the cheapest, and queues grow at peak times.
Ride-hailing apps. The big apps work at the airport and have their own pickup area. Prices are low, but you need working data, some patience to find your driver, and a car big enough for your bags.
Hotel shuttle. Some hotels include a transfer or sell one. Ask before you book anything else.
Pre-booked private driver. Your driver waits in the arrivals area with your name on a sign, helps with the luggage and already knows your hotel. The price is agreed before you fly, and the driver follows your flight number, so a delay is not your problem.
How long the drive takes
In normal traffic, from the airport:
- Kuta and Legian: 15 to 30 minutes
- Jimbaran: 15 to 25 minutes
- Nusa Dua: 25 to 35 minutes
- Sanur: 30 to 40 minutes
- Seminyak: 30 to 45 minutes
- Uluwatu: 45 to 60 minutes
- Canggu: 60 to 90 minutes
- Ubud: 75 minutes to 2 hours
Late afternoon and early evening are the slowest hours. A flight that lands at 5 pm can double the drive to Canggu.
Five things that make arrival easier
- Send your flight number when you book, not only the arrival time.
- Confirm what the price includes. Ask about airport parking and toll fees, so nothing is added at the end.
- Save your hotel's map pin. Villa names are easy to confuse, and many small streets look alike.
- Say how much luggage you have. Four adults with four large suitcases and a surfboard need more than a small car.
- Keep your phone on after landing. If your flight is late or the exit is busy, your driver can reach you on WhatsApp.
Turning the arrival into day one
If you land in the morning, you do not have to lose the day waiting for a 2 pm check-in. Many guests ask their driver to stop on the way: breakfast in Jimbaran, a first look at a beach, or a visit to Uluwatu before heading to the hotel. With a full-day booking, the 10 hours start when the car leaves the airport, and your suitcases stay with the driver.
Going home
For an international flight, plan to reach the airport three hours before departure. Add the drive times above and a safety margin. From Ubud or Canggu, that means leaving the hotel at least five hours before take-off.
